Chess for beginners – nature of the game and its concepts – for beginners in a nutshell.
When we teach Chess for beginners there is initially a sense of confusion in understanding what we are doing.
Briefly put – The game of chess is played between two players who move chess pieces on a square board with black and white squares – called a ‘Chessboard’.
Chess is similar to a real battle. You don’t just start the war. You first delegate your army, defend your territory by moving the chess pawns or pieces, then prepare your armies for battle known as developing your pieces, and lastly start attacking your oppoent.
The nature and objectives of the game of Chess:
- The player with the White pieces makes the first move in the game. The Black player (one who has the black chess pieces) will respond to this White move – either by developing his pieces or parrying white’s attack if any.
- The race is in developing the pieces as fast as possible and attacking the opponent’s camp to strike the enemy King.
- The aim of each player is to place the opposite king ‘under arrest’ in such a way that the opponent has no legal move to escape from the attack.
- The player who accomplishes this aim is said to have won or ‘checkmated’ the opponent. The opponent who has been checkmated has lost the game.
Points to note:
Leaving one’s own King exposed to checks, capturing the opponent’s King, or playing without the Kings are not allowed.
If the situation is such that neither player can possibly checkmate or make any progress, the game is considered drawn or the players may agree to a draw (tie). In this case, the point will be split.
