Private Chess Classes – 5 Useful Points to Consider

Private Chess Classes – 5 Useful Points to Consider

Private chess classes are excellent for those chess players who are serious about getting better at competitive chess.

Players who have made chess a passion or want to take the next step to become a Chess Professional usually say that private chess lessons are the best way to grow their chess skills faster.

Private chess lessons can give a competing player a strong advantage over the opponents and can help a beginner develop at a focussed pace.

I have been teaching both group and private chess lessons for 20+ years and know that nothing beats private lessons if time is essential.

If you are considering private chess lessons for your child, there are a few things to consider apart from the prices.

Pre-Class assessment before starting Private Chess lessons

This is an absolute must. It serves as an ice-breaker for the child and the coach and gives the coach a proper perspective on the child’s abilities and limitations.

It also gives the child an idea of what the coach is capable of.

His communication and attitude in class will help bond better.

As a chess coach, I usually start with an exhaustive and careful assessment of the student’s current skill level, his behavior, and his learning and understanding speed.

If the child already knows the basics, then the assessment will reveal what blank spots he has in his chess knowledge,

Whether advanced or intermediate or a beginner, the chess coach will ensure a curated syllabus suitable for your level.

You will have fun and will also see your strength improving!

What are the benefits of private chess classes?

Private chess classes

These private chess classes allow students of chess the opportunity to have intensive individual attention.

They will be able to focus on select topics not available in a one-hour group/classroom situation.

These include

  • analysis of their own games,
  • in-depth study of selected chess openings
  • in-depth study of selected chess Endings
  • instruction on Middlegame knowledge – at a level specifically tailored to the individual student’s need
  • If you’re a good player stagnating at some point, getting a coach may be the way to go.

With private chess lessons, you will get a dynamic practice.

This means that the classes planned for you will be different from the routine curriculum and evolve depending on the problems that are plaguing your chess.

Who can ideally take private chess classes?

The most ideal student for private chess classes would be the one who is willing to work hard for chess growth.

They can be rank beginners or professional players with a passion to improve their skills.

But to me it’s mostly those players who are willing to put in the hours.

Having a Private chess lesson also may appear to be pricey for some, but actually it is not.

The reason is the amount of time you save by way of getting curated chess guidance.

If you have to do it yourself, you would be spending a lot of time going in the wrong direction.

So it is a question of Time vs Money in the long run.

Can Siblings avail of the class at the same time?

Certainly. If the kids are all at the same level of playing strength, why not?

If so, then combining them into a group makes sense.

They will compliment each other and also train each other after the class hours.

However, if they are playing at different strengths, then they should be trained individually, not combined.

Reason being that it would only benefit one of them.

Duration of Private Classes

Private classes are usually 30 to 45 minutes in duration,

About 15-30 minutes of the time for instruction, and 15-30 minutes for training/playing.

Duration pretty much depends on the age and level of the child and the speed of grasping and retaining all the points.
